I got stopped by cop several years ago around 3 in the morning. My wife and I were driving to the 24hr Walgreens in Montgomery, Illinois to get milk. Why 3 in the morning? Because we're both retired and sometimes we stay up late. I was sure I didn't do anything wrong and that she was just fishing. She said something about crossing a yellow line illegally. She asked me where I was going and I said, "That way!" and pointed my finger. She didn't like that! Then she claimed to have smelled the odor of alcoholic in my car. I've been clean and sober since July of 1988 and I called her a liar. She ordered me out of the car. Then she demanded that I submit to a sobriety test and I refused. She asked me what I had to hide and I told her nothing. She threatened me with arrest and I told her to go for it. Then out of the blue a car drove by with its headlights off. She looked at it, handed me back my DL, got in her car and took off in pursuit the other driver. She was fishing and looking to hang something on someone.

As someone from outside the US I find it amazing that in the US these sobriety tests are being carried out and the results assessed by a police officer, then further that the results of a blood test take so long to be returned. The last time I went through a random drink driving checkpoint the whole experience took about a minute. I pulled up alongside the officer and wound down my window, he explained what was happening and what I needed to do. The officer produced a small handheld device, and I counted to 5 into the device and it provided an immediate result. Being negative I was invited to drive on, everything was professional and cordial. Had I tested positive, I would then have been asked to provide a breath sample for testing, had this shown an elevated level of alcohol I would then be taken for a blood test. The accuracy of this test is sufficient for use in court. The police have access to that result immediately and will only make an arrest if the result exceeds the legal limit.

This is why we use breathalysers in Australia and are happy to do so…. This shit would never fly
